SO MANY ABBREVIATIONS

GEO. AEO. AIO. LLMO.
What does it all mean?

Right now, the industry is scrambling to name what's happening. GEO, AEO, AIO, LLMO — different acronyms, slightly different emphases, but all pointing at the same shift.
AI is becoming the primary way people find businesses.

This isn't the first time. Back in the early 2000s, there was SEM, web positioning, organic search optimisation, and half a dozen other terms jostling before the market settled on SEO. The others are largely forgotten now. One name won. The same consolidation is coming.

/dʒiː.iː.əʊ/ abbrev.

GEO

Generative Engine Optimisation
NOUN | DIGITAL MARKETING
The practice of optimising a brand’s digital presence to be discovered, cited, and recommended by AI-powered search engines and large language models, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Widely considered the most comprehensive and commercially adopted term in the field.
“We asked ChatGPT to recommend a plumber in a particular suburb of Chicago. It named three businesses. None of them were our client, despite them being one of the largest operators in the region.”
p.22 aeon — aesthetic

AEO

Answer Engine Optimisation
/eiː.ɔː/ abbrev.
NOUN | DIGITAL MARKETING
The practice of structuring website content so that AI assistants and voice search engines can extract and surface it as a direct answer to user queries, without requiring the user to click through to a webpage. Closely related to GEO, with particular emphasis on structured data and FAQ formats.
“After implementing AEO principles, the business began appearing as the cited source when users asked Google’s AI Overview ‘what is the best accountant in Bristol.’”
p.19 aio — airborne

AIO

AI Optimisation
/ei.aɪ.əʊ/ abbrev.
NOUN | DIGITAL MARKETING
A broad, catch-all term for the practice of making a brand’s online presence more legible, accessible, and recommendable to AI systems. Often used by practitioners who prefer not to commit to a more specific acronym. Encompasses technical, content, and entity-related optimisation work.
“We searched for the best physiotherapist in Denver. The AI listed five clinics. Our client wasn’t mentioned once. That’s when we realised AIO wasn’t optional anymore.”
p.537 llma — load

LLMO

Large Language Model Optimisation
/ɛl.ɛl.ɛm.əʊ/ abbrev.
NOUN | DIGITAL MARKETING / AI
The technical discipline of optimising brand content, schema, and data structures specifically to improve how large language models represent, cite, and recommend a brand in their outputs. More technical in orientation than GEO, often used in AI and developer communities.
“My assistant uses Claude to shortlist suppliers before I ever see them. LLMO isn’t a technical exercise — it’s whether you exist in that output or not.”
sforzando = shade

SGE

Search Generative Experience
/es.dʒiː.iː/ abbrev.
NOUN | DIGITAL MARKETING / AI
Google’s original internal term for the AI-generated summary that appears at the top of certain search results, now largely superseded by “AI Overviews.” Optimising for SGE involves structuring content so it is selected as a source for Google’s AI-generated responses rather than appearing only in traditional blue-link results.
“The SEO team noticed that traditional keyword rankings had less impact on traffic once SGE summaries began appearing, prompting a rethink of their entire content strategy.”
galaxy = gauge

GAIO

Generative AI Optimisation
/dʒeɪoʊ/ abbrev.
NOUN | DIGITAL MARKETING / AI
A hybrid term combining “generative AI” with traditional optimisation language. Used predominantly in enterprise and consulting contexts to describe the broader strategic practice of aligning brand content, digital infrastructure, and knowledge graph signals with the requirements of generative AI systems.
“A customer told us they’d asked Perplexity to compare landscaping companies in the area. We came up third. That conversation was the moment we started taking GAIO seriously.”
As of early 2026, GEO is generally accepted as the leading term.
Wikipedia lists GEO as the primary entry, with AEO, AIO, LLMO and rest treated as variants. When Wikipedia picks a winner, the argument is usually over.

From cold prospect
to signed retainer.

Three steps. One complete sales pipeline.

1

The Audit

Run a live AI diagnostic on any prospect's domain in under two minutes. A branded, one-page PDF shows them exactly where they're invisible to AI, with your agency's logo on the cover. Send it cold. It opens doors nothing else does.

2

The Discovery

An AI strategist leads your prospect through a consultative session, drawing out their business goals, ideal customers, and competitive positioning. This is what separates GEO Roadmap from every generic scanner on the market. The prospect feels heard. The output is genuinely bespoke.

3

The Roadmap

A comprehensive, white-labelled strategic prescription combining the Audit data with the Discovery transcript. Deeply technical. Immediately actionable. You put a price on it, present it, and let the document do the closing. Prospects don't read it and think "I could do this myself."
